STUCK IN A RUT // 7 WAYS TO GET UNSTUCK

During the past few weeks I’ve been stuck in a rut. Demotivated is literally an understatement!

I’ve been trapped in a never ending cycle of eat, sleep, repeat – doing nothing basically. Yeah, totally smashing it for final year of university…

Oh and I’ve even gone back to K-dramas. Just shows how I’m seriously stuck in a rut and how desperate I am to make time go by.

Ironically after making the video, I managed to get motivated to do other things. Top tip: make a video about being stuck in a rut to get unstuck.

However not everyone makes videos on YouTube so here are some alternative methods for getting unstuck:

There’s only so much we can fit in our brains so let it out!

1. EXPRESS YOUR FRUSTRATION

Let it out! Write about it in a journal or even talk to yourself about it in the mirror. It’s not as weird as it sounds, trust me and everyone secretly does it anyway. You could even rant to friends. Don’t do it all the time unless you want to become that annoying friend. Disclaimer: I’m not responsible for any friends you lose if you decide to take that route.

Part of feeling stuck in a rut is letting everything get to us. Then as a result we feel overwhelmed with all of the things we need to do.

When we realise we’re not making progress with the zillion things needed to be done, we feel demotivated. All we then want to do is curl up into a ball for a week and hide forever. There’s only so much we can fit in our brains so let it out!

Depending on your ‘level of being stuck’, perhaps you will be motivated enough to exercise and get out of the rut!

2. EXERCISE

Exercising is one of the BEST things you can do for your body! It’s fat burning, endorphin boosting and it gives you a sense of achievement (even if all you’ve done during the day is just take naps).

However as someone that gets stuck in a rut and feels super lazy, exercise is really unlikely to happen. Depending on your ‘level of being stuck’, perhaps you will be motivated enough to exercise and get out of the rut!

If not, just take a walk (although getting out of the house may seem impossible to you right now…). I find what motivates me to get out of the house is if I’m going to buy snacks or collecting my takeaway. #lazylife

JUST DO IT.

3. BREAK IT DOWN

Take it easy. Yes there’s a million things to do but if you continue what you’re doing now (i.e nothing), there will forever be a million things to do if you’re stuck in a rut.

I suggest you to write down everything that you need to do to empty your mind.

Then pick ONE task to do.

ONE only.

Then JUST DO IT.

i'm stuck in a rut

Just think SIMPLE and think: OK I need to do X and that’s what I’m gonna do today.

4. DON’T OVERTHINK, KEEP IT SIMPLE

Upon waking up I make the mistake of looking at my email and going on social media. Before I know it, 4 hours have gone by. Afterwards I look at my ever long to do list which hasn’t shortened since I last checked 4 hours ago. So I end up feeling frustrated with the long impending list. Then I procrastinate for another 4 hours…

The key here is to not overthink yourself into not doing anything or not to overthink and become super stressed.

Top tip: Don’t go onto YouTube the first thing in the morning!

Just think SIMPLE and think: OK I need to do X and that’s what I’m gonna do today. Don’t get stuck in a rut! The day I made this video I was motivated and it’s because I just ignored all of the other thoughts in my end.

I just decided to film – no ifs or buts.

If you… it can get things going a lot easier the next day.

5. PLAN THE NIGHT BEFORE

Before you go to sleep, pick ONE MAIN TASK to do the next day. If you look at your long to do list the next morning it’s overwhelming and can prompt long bouts of procrastination.

Therefore, decide on one important task the night before. It can get things going a lot easier the next day. That way when you wake up you know what you’re going to work on straight away. It’ll be easier to focus on that main task.

My favourite part is when he talks about laziness and how everyone just wants to chill but chilling doesn’t pay the bills haha.

6. ASK YOURSELF ARE YOU FULL OF SHIT

When I was demotivated, I came across Brandon Carter’s video ‘ Are you full of shit?” and it really got to me. All of us have lots of goals and ambitions yet a lot of us are giving ourselves excuses all the time. Naturally we aren’t going to achieve much and perhaps we’re just full of shit.

My favourite part is when he talks about laziness and how everyone just wants to chill but chilling doesn’t pay the bills haha.

Consequently the question to ask yourself is,

HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT THIS? DO YOU WANT TO BE THE BEST OR MEDIOCRE?

Remember, mediocre actions lead to mediocre results.

You don’t know how much they’ve worked, how much they’ve grown and developed

7. REMEMBER THAT YOU’RE A WORK IN PROGRESS

Lastly when you’re stuck in a rut it’s important to remember that you’re a work in progress. Don’t compare yourself to others! I sometimes get really frustrated or demotivated when watching other people’s YouTube videos. I’ll think “They’re so successful, I’ve got such a long way to go.” I then sink into the ‘I’m never gonna get there’ mentality.

Those YouTubers/bloggers/[insert your profession] worked hard to get where they are now. You don’t know how much they’ve worked, grown and developed along the way to achieving their success. Therefore don’t compare. Instead take inspiration from them. Learn from them. Be positive about your journey! 🙂
